Are you an active individual who has maybe been struggling with repetitive injuries? Perhaps you have had a decrease in performance even though you are training just as hard, if not harder.
This clinic may be for you. Around 60-80% of active females struggle with low energy availability (LEA), which, if left unaddressed, can develop into relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs). This is seen predominantly in females, but it can be seen in males as well.
LEA develops when there is a mismatch between the calories consumed and the energy expended during exercise. It is not necessary to be underweight to develop this condition, nor is it required to be a professional athlete.
Lauren, one of our senior physiotherapists at Kingsland Physiotherapy, represented Great Britain in figure skating for 6 years before falling in love with endurance sports, particularly long-distance triathlon. She holds a Master’s in Health Science with research on REDs and has personal experience with this condition.
One of the things she discovered when figuring out the best solution for herself was that many areas need to be addressed, and it can be confusing to know where to start. She hopes to help with your injuries, modify your training load, educate as well as referring you to anyone else you need to see, depending on your needs. If that’s back to your GP for bloods, a dietician for some personalised advice or a podiatrist for better biomechanics. She enjoys working alongside many health professionals to empower you and get you back on track doing what you love.
A session could include: understanding your symptoms, goals, and current concerns; assessing strength; reviewing workouts, loading and strength training; and discussing any referrals required to support you.

Lauren has been working in the private sector, with interests mostly in MSK, sports, biomechanics and long term pain. She graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2017 with an honours in Physiotherapy. Since then Lauren has trained in both mat and reformer Pilates and used this as part of her rehabilitation process.
